Taking the classroom outdoors

At Brockholes we offer a variety of fantastic educational programmes, while youngsters will be able to see that Brockholes is home to a host of wildlife, as well as learning about our groundbreaking floating Visitor Village and the fascinating geological history of the site.

Facilities

Conveniently located just off junction 31 of the M6 at Preston, Brockholes is perfectly placed for schools across the region.

Your school will have use of one of our classroom settings, the education centre or The Look Out and you will have our highly-qualified Education Officers dedicated to your group throughout the day.

Our education centre is located on our floating visitor village overlooking Meadow lake whilst the Lookout, a purpose-built bird hide classroom, overlooks No 1 Pit Lake getting you even closer to nature at Brockholes.

Located on the first floating visitor village in the UK, our education centre is perfectly placed in the heart of the reserve with access all facilities.

The Lookouts location, as well as being one of the most important sites in the UK for breeding waders, No 1 Pit provides great views of our sand martin wall, which provides a valuable breeding habitat for when they arrive in spring.

Self-led Visits

You are more than welcome to bring your school group to Brockholes for the day and do your own thing. Here is some useful information to help you plan your visit:

Coach parking is limited. If you are planning on coming by coach, please contact us on 01772 872000 or email brockholes@lancswt.org.uk to book your coach/coaches in. We urge you to book your space well in advance. This is especially important for the spring and summer terms, our peak time for school visits! Also the motorway bridge at Brockholes entrance will not allow for double decker coaches to get on site so please bear this in mind.

Our pond dipping platform is only available to schools booked in with our education team. We do not permit pond dipping anywhere else on the reserve. Likewise, our outdoor classrooms are only available to schools booked in with our education team. Please get in touch on the above number to discuss your visit.

Outreach Programme

Can’t get to us? Then we can come to you! Our outreach education programme is very popular and offers a wide range of programmes for those who are unable to reach Brockholes.
