New Xplorer rules for 2020
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have had to alter the way we deliver our events. Please read below for information on how Xplorer will be run in 2020.
Can I attend with my friends?
Unfortunately not. As a Trust, we take the safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors very seriously. We also know that as a business, we have an important role to play in helping stop the spread of coronavirus. You have told us how important time in nature is to you, now more than ever. With the changing local rules we have taken the decision to run our events in household or support bubble groups only. This will support everyone in maintaining a safe social distance throughout. We look forward to welcoming you safely to one of our events very soon!

There are more than 6 people in my houshold or support bubble. Can we still attend?
Do we have to book?
Are the challenges the same?
Yes! Ultimately it is the same Xplorer which you all know and love with two different challenges:
The markers you need to find are located on or next to surfaced paths and is pram friendly. The markers are in number order and form a circular route and is perfect for those who are new to Brockholes or to orienteering or with younger children.
This course represents more of a challenge and you will need to use your navigation skills to track down the markers located across the reserve! Not suitable for prams.
Do we have to complete the challenge in the hour?
Not at all. The time slot is your hour to come and collect your pack from the Welcome Centre, split into different time slots to avoid queuing. You can spend as long as you would like on the nature reserve, exploring and enjoying the beautiful sites.
Do we still get a certificate and prize on completion?
Yes of course! When you turn up at your allocated time, you will collect your pack/s:
Each map pack contains - One map (either challenge 1 or 2), one answer sheet, a Brockholes Pencil and full instructions. On completion you will receive the answers, a certificate and a sweet treat!
Please ensure that you book the number of packs you require for your family group.
General event FAQs
Do I need to book?
How do I book an event?
- Online via our website, through Eventbrite or on our Facebook page
- If there are still spaces available on the day of an event, these tickets will be on sale at the Welcome Centre at a slightly higher price.
Please note that our cheapest tickets are only available online.
Do you send out tickets through the post?
No, in order to keep our event costs as low as possible, we do not send out paper tickets through the post.
If you book your tickets online, you will receive email confirmation and an e-ticket from Skiddle, our online booking agent.
Do ensure that you enter your email address into the online booking system correctly, if you don't, you won't receive an email confirmation or e-ticket! There is also the option to receive a text confirmation if you book online.
If you book in person in The Nest Gift Shop, we will give you a till receipt for your payment, just bring this along to the event with you.
I have booked online, but haven't received any confirmation?
Check your spam/junk folder. The email will come from Eventbrite, our online booking agent and not from us at Brockholes.

What time does the event start?
The start time is detailed on our events calendar. Our Event Leader will be at the meeting point 5 -10 minutes before the event is due to start.
Please make sure that you give yourself enough time to get to Brockholes and walk to the meeting point ready for the advertised start time.

Where do I go when I get to Brockholes?
Our events calendar gives you details of the meeting point for the event so please check this.
The Welcome Centre, Activity Room and Meadow Lake Suite are all located on our floating Visitor Village.
If you have booked advanced pond dipping tickets, you can just head straight to the pond dipping tanks located near The Lookout.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The majority of events at Brockholes go ahead whatever the weather! We are a nature reserve and advise you to come dressed for the weather conditions wearing sturdy footwear for outdoor events or if you intend to explore the reserve.
We always plan for bad weather and may alter an event slightly to take weather conditions into account, for example altering our route or spending more time inside on very wet days.
We may take the decision to cancel an event due to severe weather conditions or if severe conditions are forecast. If WE take the decision to cancel the event, you will be issued with a full refund.
How will I find out if an event has been cancelled?
If you have booked your tickets online, you will receive an automatic cancellation email from Eventbrite advising you that the event has been cancelled. It will provide you with a reason for the cancellation plus details on how your refund will be processed.
Check our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts for the most up to date information before setting off to Brockholes.
Please note that in times of severe weather our staff may not be in the office or able to answer the phone.
Do you provide refunds?
Yes, if WE take the decision to cancel an event.
If you booked online, Eventbrite will automatically process your refund and you don’t need to take any action. If you book in person in The Nest, you will need to contact us to arrange for a refund to be processed.
We do not provide refunds if you find yourself unable to attend an event due to unforeseen circumstances.
I have booked for an event but I am running late. What can I do?
The event will start at the advertised start time. If you arrive late you will be able to join the session and participate in the remainder of the event or activity. Please note that many of our activities and events take place across the reserve, so the group may have moved on and left the advertised meeting point by the time you arrive. In this situation please report to the Welcome Centre where we will be able to locate the group and/or leader for you and direct you to a suitable point to meet with the rest of the group.
We do not issue refunds if you miss some or all of an event due to a late arrival.
I would love to hold an event at Brockholes. How do I go about this?
If you are thinking about Brockholes as a venue for an event that would be open to the public or would like to work with us Brockholes, email Sarah our Events Manager at firstname.lastname@example.org with details, even if it is only at the "ideas" stage!
Are you looking for event suppliers/contractors?
Yes! We are always on the lookout for new and exciting event contractors and suppliers! We would love to hear from you! Just drop us a line at email@example.com with full details of what you do.
At present we are particularly looking for:
- Woodland crafts people (including wood turners, carvers and talented people who make items from wood!)
- People with a "bee" connection - people who supply honey or items made from honey or bees wax, artists, crafts etc.
