April photography competition results

April photography competition results

Dave Bennion

Bugs and insects begin to emerge from their winter slumber throughout April and fill the air with sound and colour. This month’s photography competition theme was ‘A Bugs Life’, and we received an unbelievable selection of charming images.

There are a staggering twenty-seven thousand insects that can be found across the UK, all ranging greatly in size, shape and colour. As a result, this month's competition entries were a diverse selection, which demonstrated just some of the amazing insects which call our region home.

Ladybird

Dave Bennion

In first place is Dave Bennion, our judge stated ‘This image perfectly addresses the brief; I just can’t get enough of the wonderful spring colours! The vibrant red of the ladybird carapace, offset against the orange petals is magnificent.'

Hawthorn shield bug

Trevor Davenport

In second place is Trevor Davenport, our judge loved ‘the almost tactile quality of this image of a hawthorn shield bug. The bug's armour is illustrated with such clarity it makes you feel as though you could reach out and touch it.’

Spider preying upon caterpillar

Simon Lundbeck

Finally in third place is Simon Lundbeck, our judge proclaimed ‘the detail captured within this photograph of a spider preying upon a caterpillar is astonishing. The intricate nature of this beguiling creature is portrayed with precision. The ability to capture the complex structure of this predatory insect in action makes for a fascinating image!’

The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winning photos will be displayed in our visitor centres for everyone to see.
