Wildlife Sightings – May 2023

Emma Jayne Sharples

May has brought us some spectacular sightings at Brockholes!

This month we have seen the return of the longer nights and warmer weather that we have all been waiting for. With the warmer weather, we have seen the return of our more seasonal wildlife and our beloved insects have begun emerging all around, much to our delight!

Male Broad Bodied Chaser

Ken Hayes

To kick start our sightings for this month we have a fantastic Male Broad-bodied Chaser! This fantastic image was taken by Ken Hayes who managed to capture this incredible insect with such clarity. This stunning dragonfly can be spotted flying around from May to July, often around ponds and small lakes.

Common Tern

Andrew Bradley

“Aren’t I a handsome chap!” Andrew captured this incredible image of a Common Tern hovering above the lake creating a perfect reflection of this fantastic bird. Common Tern’s nest in noisy colonies and can often be spotted plunge-diving for fish.

Small Copper Butterfly

Emma Jayne Sharples

The Small Copper Butterfly is easily recognized by its stunning bright orange forewings with dark brown spots. These Beautiful butterflies are often found in dry, sunny habitats from April onwards. This incredible image was taken by Emma Jayne Sharples at Brockholes and captures the incredible colour of this beautiful creature!

Spider cluster

Trevor James Southward

Although to some this cluster of spiders may be the stuff of nightmares, we happen to think this fantastic capture by Trevor demonstrates the amazing diversity of wildlife present on the reserve. The young spiders will often remain in these clusters until they are mature enough to disburse and branch out on their own.

Kevin the Kestrel

Linda Illston

Last but most certainly not least, Kevin the Kestrel is at it again! Posing perfectly atop a post with his wings up, Linda Illston captured his incredible features perfectly. Kestrels are a familiar sight at Brockholes, enjoying the open habitats that we have to offer.
