As with all wildlife, and people, there’s certain times of year when it’s best to spot certain creatures. And some days they may be out in abundance, and the next day they’re hidden away. That’s the beauty of nature, you just never know what could happen from one day to the next.

As well as seeing birds all over the reserve, we have a designated bird feeding area, along the Guild Wheel path, just past the Look Out.

Here, we see the beautiful blue tits and coal tits, wrens and thrushes, and most notably, the greater spotted woodpecker, which often comes out allowing out visitors to take stunning photographs of their coloured plumage.

In winter, we are visited by a lovely Bittern (or is there two?) and the herons lurk around the edge of our lakes while the waders forage in the mud. The starlings dance in the sky from November to early January and Kevin our resident kestrel can be found all year round swooping around the car park.

There’s hundreds to choose from, so why not visit and see what you can find? You could even pop into our visitor centre and our volunteers will help you identify birds you may not be so sure of.
