June photography competition results

Ross Hoddinott

June's photography competition theme was ‘Butterflies and Moths’. There are fifty-nine species of butterfly present in the UK and a whopping two and a half thousand types of moth, and they all vary greatly in size, shape and colour. As a result we received an amazing selection of images this month.

Ken Hayes was awarded first place for June’s photography competition, well done Ken!

Common Blue Butterfly

Ken Hayes

The common blue butterfly is a regular sight in our region, however this doesn’t detract from its stunning beauty. Our judge proclaimed ‘this image highlights the striking colour and rich pattern of this beautiful butterfly, which never fails to catch my eye on a spring walk.’

Painted Lady Butterfly

Alan Williams

In second place is Alan Williams, our judge stated ‘this marvellous image of an orange tip butterfly is spectacular, given the fact that these delicate creatures are most commonly observed in hedgerows and woodland margins, the quality and clarity of this image is even more impressive.

Green Veined White butterfly

Andrew Spencer

Finally in third place is Andrew Spencer, our judge loved this image of a green veined white butterfly proclaiming ‘the ability to capture the prominent green veins of this butterfly is breath-taking. The fact that the vibrant pigmentation and texture has been captured with such luminosity is outstanding.

The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winning photos will be displayed in our visitor centres for everyone to see.
