January photography competition results

Nigel Whiteside

To start the year, we asked our photography competition participants to enter their best ‘Mammal Magic’ shots, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. We received a delightful selection of images ranging from the inquisitive little bank vole to the fantastic red fox.

The images entered this month perfectly captured the spirit of the theme, and displayed the magic of our native mammals. The ability of our competition entrants never ceases to amaze us; however, the quality of this month's images really was something else.

After much deliberation Craig Smith was selected as the winner of this month's competition.

Fox cubs

Craig Smith

Our judge was overjoyed upon viewing this image and stated ‘the vibrant colour and detail captured within this photo of a skulk of fox pups, is truly delightful. The timing and patience required to capture such a quality shot is mightily impressive.’

Badger

Bradley Hamer

In second place is Bradley Hamer, our judge adored this image and proclaimed ‘Bradley captured this remarkable photo of a badger emerging from the undergrowth, in the idyllic Lancashire country side. This chance encounter produced a photograph that illustrates the joyful spirit of this animal, whilst also demonstrating a great deal of skill and ability.’

Red squirrel

Peter Risley

Finally in third place is Peter Risley, our judge proclaimed ‘this wonderful photograph of the famously elusive red squirrel is amazing. This image taken at the fantastic Freshfield Dune Heath Nature Reserve highlights the resilient character of this standout species.’

The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winning photos will be displayed in our visitor centres for everyone to see.
