February photography competition results

Tom Wilson

Despite our region being battered by storms Dudley and Eunice throughout February, that didn’t stop our photography competition participants capturing some amazing images. Last month's theme was ‘Winter Birds’, and with such a wonderful variety of birdlife present on our doorstep, we received some fantastic shots.

Teal, pintail and shoveler were just some of the species our entrants photographed, and we had an extremely difficult decision to make in choosing a winner. However, after much consideration Paul Hurley was awarded first place in February’s competition.

Kestrel stood on snowy grass

Paul Hurley

Our judge selected this image for its ‘subtle yet eye-catching quality. Paul managed to take this fantastic shot at Brockholes Nature Reserve, and it beautifully highlights the complex nature of the magnificent kestrel. With their small yet robust stature and pointed wings, this sensational bird always catches the eye.’

Heron perched upon a branch

Fay Ellis

In second place is Fay Ellis, our judge loved the arrangement of this image and proclaimed ‘the ability to capture this heron perched high upon a branch, demonstrates its imposing stature and elegance. An image containing such depth and light requires a monumental amount of skill and timing, well done Fay!’

Snow bunting

Tom Wilson

Finally in third place is Tom Wilson, our judge stated ‘this shot captures the subtle beauty of this snow bunting, and it's incredible snowy plumage, perfect for winters spent on our sandy, flotsam-strewn shorelines.’

The winner will be contacted via email with details of how to redeem their £100 optics voucher prize. Additionally, all winning photos will be displayed in our visitor centres for everyone to see.
