Photography Competition Results – October 2023

Fabulous Fungi was the theme for October, and we received some astonishing entries!

October is a wonderful time of year! We watch as our landscapes transform into autumnal wonderlands all around. Nestled deep within these wonderlands, hidden amongst the fallen leaves and clinging to the trees, we see the incredible living organism that is fungi.

This month our photography competition was all about the Fungi Kingdom, under the theme of ‘Fabulous Fungi’, and the entries we received where incredible! Our amazing photographers captured some of the fungus kingdom’s finest specimens, from the classic fly agaric to amethyst deceiver to sulphur tufts, and many more.

This month it was incredibly difficult for our judges to pick a winner, as the calibre of entries was outstanding.

Unfortunately, there can be only one winner. After much deliberation, the winner of October’s photography competition is … Allison Lyon!

Our judges where amazed by this incredible photograph titled, ‘Fungi Tree’. They loved the way that she captured the many Sulphur Tufts, as they encased the trunk of the tree. One of our judges loved the “perspective and the "ladder-effect" of the fungi”. The composition of this image, from the autumnal hues to the clarity of the fungi, is outstanding!

Crepidotus - Tony North

Second place was awarded to Tony North and his incredible photograph of Crepidotus fungi. We loved the clarity he captured of these fabulous fungi! The white of the fungi against the blurred-out background, really makes it the star of the show.

Beacon of Colour among the Autumnal leaf litter

Gregory S Phillipson 

Finally, third place goes to Gregory S Phillipson and his stunning photography of the wonderful, fly agaric, titled ‘Beacon of Colour among the Autumnal leaf litter’. He captured this well-known fungi perfectly, with one judge adding that “this specimen is beautifully lit and composed.”

November’s competition is currently open and has the theme of ‘Shades of Autumn’. As per 2021 rule changes, photographs can be taken anywhere in the Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside region and are not limited to Lancashire Wildlife Trust nature reserves.
