March's Wildlife Sightings at Brockholes

March's Wildlife Sightings at Brockholes

Pat Aitchison

March is a wonderful time of year for spotting wildlife at Brockholes!

As we ‘spring’ into a different season, the wildlife at Brockholes begins to blossom! This month we have seen the weather change, bringing in those warmer temperatures and bringing back some of our much loved wildlife.

Chiffchaff

John Wallace

This month we have seen the return of the Chiffchaff to Brockholes! This stunning Chiffchaff was spotted perched on a branch, enjoying a light snack, by John Wallace. One of our earliest arrivals, the Chiffchaff can be heard singing away in early spring.

Kestrel

Trevor James Southward

Trevor James Southward spotted Kevin the Kestrel taking a break high up in the trees and clearly, Kevin spotted him too! Kestrels are incredible birds which, have the ability to keep their heads still whilst hovering no matter what the weather.

Barn Owl

Thomas Stokes

This incredible Barn Owl, photographed by Thomas Stokes, was seen flying low over Brockholes. Barns owls can be found in many places across the UK and are well known due to their distinctive heart-shaped face and pure white feathers.

Woodpecker

David Pinder

This wonderful Woodpecker was spotted by David Pinder whilst out exploring Brockholes. This one in particular is a Great Spotted Woodpecker and can often be heard ‘drumming’ on the tree trunk, on which it perches.

Song Thrush

Dave Bennion

From the ‘drumming’ of a woodpecker to singing of a Song Thrush, this wonderful little bird was spotted by Dave Bennion. This familiar songbird can often be found singing away in parks, gardens, woodland and scrub.

Spoonbill

Bill Aspin

The incredibly rare Spoonbill was spotted at Brockholes this month! Marking only the fourth recorded sighting of this magnificent bird at Brockholes, Bill Aspin captured this stunning photo of the Spoonbill in flight! Once absent from our shores this rare bird can now be seen infrequently across England.

Blackthorn Blossom

Pat Aitchison

As well as all our feathered friends, March has seen the awakening of the trees at Brockholes as they begin to blossom. One of the trees that has begun to blossom are our incredible Blackthorn trees, captured beautifully by Pat Aitchison. During the winter months this incredible blossom will transform into deep purple fruit know as ‘sloes’.
