January Wildlife Sightings

January Wildlife Sightings

Brian Welch

As the new year rolled in, the wildlife at Brockholes came out to play!

January has brought us a variety of different weather, from sun to rain and even snow, but this hasn't stopped our wonderful wildlife from coming out and saying ‘hello’!

Buzzard

Paul Lambert

This incredible Buzzard was spotted soaring silently through the sky! Observing a buzzard circling above the reserve is always a fantastic nature moment, and the perfect antidote to dark gloomy days.

Nuthatch- Leslie Price

Leslie Price

Leslie captured this amazing image of a Nuthatch! The Nuthatch is the only bird in the UK that can climb head first down a tree trunk. It does so by holding on with its incredibly powerful toes, as you can see demonstrated in this picture.

Stonechat

Trevor James Southward

This marvellous Stonechat was spotted perching upon a stump! Stonechats are a small bird that are a little smaller than a Robin. They get their name from their call, which sounds just like two stones being hit together, they can mainly be found in heathlands and boggy habitats.

Winter Fox

Wendy Martin

A fox was spotted strolling around on the frozen footpaths and even stopped to have its picture taken! Foxes are part of the dog family and tend to come out mainly at night-time to hunt their prey. Foxes are not fussy eaters! They will eat anything from small mammals to berries and fruit.

Goldcrest

Brian Welch

This small Goldcrest was spotted having a great time skating across a frozen Meadow Lake in this wonderful image taken by Brian Welch! Goldcrests are Europe’s smallest bird and have the title ‘King of the Birds’, due to their beautiful golden crowns. They can be spotted in conifer woodlands and parks across the UK.

Chaffinch

Dave Bennion

What a Handsome Chaffinch! The chaffinch is a common, sparrow-sized finch of gardens, woodland, parks and farmland. They feed on seeds and insects and will happily visit birdtables. Dave spotted this beauty on his latest visit to the reserve.
